Room Changes

All rooms are assigned based off of the time and date that a student’s housing application was received. Every student is placed based on when they applied, but their room placement depends on what they picked as their preference – either ‘Prefer Roommates’ or ‘Prefer Room Preferences.’ If you chose ‘Prefer Roommates,’ we will try to match you with your roommate first. However, if no two-person rooms are left, you may be placed separately. If you chose ‘Prefer Room Preferences,’ we will place you in an available room in reference to your listed LLC application preferences. If your first listed residence hall preference is full, we will move to your second, third, or fourth choice, depending on what is available. If all of your listed room preferences are full, you will be placed in whatever room is available at the time that your application is processed. Students that chose ‘Prefer Roommates’ will also be placed with their listed room preferences taken into consideration. Additionally, whatever your roommate match selected as their placement preference, either ‘Prefer Roommates’ or ‘Prefer Room Preferences’ will also impact where you are placed.

For Freshmen and Upperclassmen Students, once all rooms have been reserved in the respective residence halls/apartments, students will be placed as rooms become available as applications are canceled.

Room Changes for Fall Assignments

There are many contingencies that must be accounted for (OARS accommodations, athletic variables, etc) when making room changes. In September, the Housing Department will have much more ability to make room changes as many students cancel their applications, do not arrive for their fall move-in, or end up dropping out within the first few weeks of classes. When these things are identified and processed, there will be room availability in some of our residence halls/apartments which can allow for room movement.

No Room Change Requests can be accepted until the ‘move-in freeze’ has been lifted, which typically takes 3-4 weeks following the semester move-in.

Room Changes because of Conflict
Room changes become available within the first few weeks after classes start. In the case of a roommate conflict, the RA and/or RC may require mediation before a room change will be considered.

Room Changes because of Preference
– Residents who want to change their housing assignment within the same hall that they are currently assigned to need to visit with their Residence Coordinator.
– Residents who want to change their housing assignment to a different hall must contact the Housing Office through email.

Room Consolidations and Buyouts

After all internal move-in processes have been completed, we will begin the room consolidations and buyout process, depending on room availability. This occurs after we have identified those students who did not show up and we had given assignments.

At the beginning of each semester, University Housing reserves the right to consolidate students in order to open up available spaces. The University also reserves the right to reassign the student at any time due to facility changes, roommate conflicts, disciplinary action and/or an emergency or casualty that renders the student’s room unsafe or otherwise inhabitable.
